HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
The usual weekly meeting of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held last night at the Hospital. Present —His Worship the Mayor of Christchurch, the Mayor of Sydenham, Dr. Turnbull, and Mr J. E. March (Hon. Sec). The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. ) A letter was read from the G-overnment re Knikoura patients, asking for their admission from time to time into the Christchurch Hospital, and what would be considered a fair charge. In reply to the Mayor of Christchurch, Mr March said he certainly thought a telegram had been sent forwarding the resolutions which had been passed by the Board, but he he had not kept a copy of it. A letter was read from the G/overnment expressing regret that it did not appear possible to place a sum of money on the supplementary estimates towards establishing a benevolent institution for the aged and infirm, which had been suggested by the Board. POBESTEBS' FREE BED. A letter was read from the chairman of the Foresters' fete committee, submitting the following questions, to which an answer was requested:— To the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. Gentlemen, —1. Are the relations of the B iard with the Government such as will allow it to enter into the following arrangements without in any way binding the Foresters to the Government, but to the Board only ? 2. For what annual payment will the Board gr»nt the Foresters a " free bed " in the Hospital ? 3. The agreement to be to the effect that one Forester shall be admitted to the Hospital, the annual payment to cover his expenses. 4. In tj»e event that no Forester be in the Hospital, then the Foresters to have the rignt to nominate any stranger to the benefit of the "free bed." 5. An officer appointed by the Foresters to have tho privilege of signing the admittance paper of one patient for each free bed they may take up. 6. Will you kindly state the conditions on which the above can be granted. The secretary was instructed to reply, acknowledging the receipt of the letter, and, in reply, to inform the writer that the questions enclosed had been submitted to the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, and they decided to defer the consideration of the matter until the full meeting of the Board. The Board discussed the matter of the establishment of a Benevolent Home for the aged and infirm, and ultimately the following resolution was passed—" That the Chairman, Mr Montgomery, and Mr Booth be named a committee to draw up a scheme for the collection of a fund for the establishment of a Benevolent Home for the aged and infirm. ORPHAN ABYLUM. A letter was read from Mr Sopp, referring to the matter of a treat for the children of the Orphan Asylum, and further suggesting that it would be a great boon if the Board could allow the institution a boat for the purpose of teaching the boys to row in tho long Bummer evenings. The consideration of both matters was deferred. house surgeon's repobt. The acting house surgeon reported the admission into the Hospital of "fourteen patients for ths week ending October 26th. The number of discharges for the corresponding period was eight. house stewabd'S report. The House steward submitted the following report . I beg to report that the pipe of the artesian well has been cut lower, and the hydraulic ram, which has been out of use for a long time past, has been lowe* ed in proportion, and is now in good working order, the cost of which is £2 10s. Another ram which supplies the laundry whh water, which has given signs of failing for some time past, has now ceased wo king, to put which in order will cost about the same sum as the other. The pipea which supply the kitchen boilers require to be taken to pieces and examined. The prison labor gang has been working two days cleaning the ..reek running through the Hospital grounds, and will complete the work in one more day. The Board sanctioned the expense incurred for the repairs of the hydraulic ram, and ordered the other works to bo done, and generally approved the report. The usual consideration of cases coming before the Board terminated the business of the meeting, and the Board adjourned until next Monday at 3.30 p.m.
