A lire occurred at six this morning at the offices of Hughes and George, solicitors, a brick building in Khortland street. The fire is supposed to have originated in the clerk’s room, its origin being unknown. The place was locked ao five last night, and there had been no fire during that day. W hen the alarm was given the fire had a strong hold on the interior, but the brigade was quickly on the spot, and brought such a jet to bear on it that it was kept within the building and got under. The inside of the building was almost wholly destroyed. Bader, an architect, occupied offices under the same roof, and lost all plans, &c. Hughes and George were uninsured. The building was insured for =£looo in the Mew Zealand, and .£IOOO in the Royal. It was owned by the widow of Eattray, the draper. Bank of New Zealand Half-yearly-Meeting. Auckland, October 29, The Bank of New Zealand hnlf yearly meeting was held today. The report f hows a net profit for the half-year, after providing for bad debts and doubtful dependencies, of .£B3 2RO; balance of undivided profit last half-year, £4983; total divisible, £88,263. A dividend of fifteen per cent was determined on, and the reserve fund increased by £25,000. £3BOO was carried forward. The Judge refused a rule nisi to set aside the verdict in the case McGee v. Auckland Jockey Club case. Leave was given to take the cate . to the Court of Appeal.
