The Harbor Board are satisfied with the passage of their Amendment Bill giving borrowing powers, after it was thought to be killed by the adn rs report of the Committee. The acceptance of compensation by Broomhall will be a boon to those settlers here wanting laud, as the block will no doubt be available for occupation by Tfiames residents. Wellington, October 26.
A supplementary ‘'Gazette” today publishes the terms of the contra d with Messrs McMeckau-Blackwood, for conveyance to and from Melbourne of the Suez mails from the 17th ulo, to January, 1880, the contractors’ steamers to call at the Bluff, Port Chalmers, Lyttelton, Wellington, and also convey mails to Nelson, Westport, Grey mouth, and Hokitika ; the mails to be delivered at the Bluff in seven days, Port Chalmers eig’.t, Lyttelton nine and a half, Wellington ten and a half days from arrival of the mails at Melbourne. For this service the sum of =£1625 annually is to be paid for thirteen trips, with the usual penalties for non-performance. Nelson, October 26.

Madame Tasca, Mademoiselle Merz, and Mr Plump; on took part in the Choral Society’s performance list evening. They gave their services gratuitously, and returned from Timaru in order to keep their promise to be present. "Balclutha, October 26.
At a meeting of the Clutha County Council yesterday, a deputation from the Borough. Council attended to request assistance in establishing a punt where the bridge had been. The; Council agreed to pay a third of the cost, and. voted £4OO for the purpose. It is believed thei Bruce and Borough Councils will pay the other two-thirds. The Council voted in all nearly £SOOO for new works. The Borough Council! is energetically repairing the main street, so that traffic may be resumed. Ihe Government; are pushing on repairs to the railway ine, and it; is expected the train will get as far ts Renfrew street at the beginning of the week, but it will! take months to get tae station-yard repaired,. Ihe railway bridge viaducts are being planted, for foot pas.engcrs. The river hanks behind tho township are washing away at a mo t alarming’ rate. If pre.ent rate is continued for a month,, buildings iu the township will be reached, and. unless protective works be at once undertaken, the township will have to be abandoned. Ihe ground being washed away is private property, and the Borough Council cannot act, besides they have not the necessary funds. The position of the whole matter is causing well grounded alarm.

The nominations for the New Year's meeting of the Auckland Racing Club are double those of past years. Joseph Bennett has, it is said, bought tho Kamo coal mine, at Whangarei, on behalf of some capitalists.
A half-mile race at Ellerslie yesterday, between Hutton and McGinley, for £SO a-sida, was won by the latter by 100 yards. An inquest was held on Wm. Wakelin, formerly bank clerk, at Whan Asylum. The verdicU was that he had “ Died from paralysis.”
