Wellington, October 25.

The proposed concession by the Government of special wires to Messrs Reeves, Reed, and Horton has created great indignation here, which increases hourly. The matter is to be further ventilated in both Houses of the Legislature. It is considered the {most scandalous attempt ever made by any Government to smother their opponents.

Gold from Havelock.

Fatal Accident at Sea. Blenheim. October 25

Four hundred ounces of gold from Havelock was brought to the Bank of New Zealand here by the police. The Havelock correspondent of the " Express" has just sent the following :—" Captain Ross, master of the Star of the Sea, was drowned on Tuesday last off Lambert's Head. The mainsail jibed when the vessel was running for Port Gore to seek shelter. The main sheet carried him overboard."

National Insurance Company. Dunedin, October 25

The National Insurance profits for the past half-year was ,£25,469. A dividend of 10 per cent, with 6d per share bonus added, absorbs ,£soflo ; .£15,000 is carried forward to reserve, which will then stand at £35,000; .£5469 is carried forward to next half-year.

Wreck of the City of AucklandOtaki, October 25.

The City of Auckland is lying stem on to the beach, buried about 8 ft. in the sand. There is now only about one foot of water at her head at low water. The stern posts and forefoot have gone. The mate and crew are still on board, not having been able to get off yesterday. There is no chance of the vessel being got off again. The sailors say they will be able to save all the luggage, but are not certain as to the cargo. The captain has ordered the sailors to dismantle the fhip. As soon as this is done the crew will be sent to Wellington. The captain left for Wellington by coach.
