NEWS OF THE DAY.

High School Cadets. —The monthly inspection of this corps will take place at the drillshed this evening, when all members are desired to attend.

Diocesan Synod.—The Diocesan Synod met again yesterday, in the College Library, and had an afternoon and evening sitting. The business transacted was of a miscellaneous character.

Supreme Coubt.—The case of Young v. Hassall was resumed yesterday. Counsel addressed the jury on both sides, and a verdict was returned for the plaintiff on all the issues, damages £370. This terminated the civil sittings. The sittings in banco, which were postponed from Tuesday, the 22nd instant, in consequence of the nisi prius cases intervening, will commence next Tuesday. Volunteebs. Considerable satisfaction was felt last night at the re-appearance of Colonel Packe in the drill-shed at the weekly inspection of the City Guards. It is now many months since he has been able to take any part in his capacity of Officer-Oommanding the District, his duties, in consequence of his leave of absence consequent on illness, having been undertaken by Major Lean. Colonel Packe, at the close of the inspection, complimented the company on their smartness and efficiency. This evening he will inspect the Engineers and Cadets. The Inspectob of Nuisances. This officer has for a long time past had more duties devolving upon him than he has been able [to carry out, and the addition made to his salary is but a just recognition of his services. The appointment of an assistant inspector will relieve the chief inspector of a certain amount of work, though in view of the extension of the city on more than one side, ho is still likely to have as much work as he can well attend to.

Impobted Meeinos.—By tho s.b. Ringarooma arrived two lots of merino rams for Messrs Dalgety, Nichols and Co. The first lot consisted of 119 sheep, bred in Victoria, on Messrs S. and J. Williams' estate, and the second lot of sixty, bred in Tasmania, on the farms of Messrs Gibson, Taylor, Tosser, and James. They have all arrived in excellent condition and health, and seem well-framed, heavy fleeced rams, well suited for the requirements of some of our Canterbury runholders.

Extension op the City.—At the last meeting of the City Council it was resolved to comply with the request of a petition from a number of the residents of a part of the Avon district who wished that portion of the district to be annexed to the city. It is now stated that the city is before very long likely to be still further extended on the Heathcote side, as a number of residents in a portion of that district desire their block to be placed within the city boundaries. It is likely that a petition will be got up for signature, and that it will be presented to the City Council in a week or two.

isHBUBTON Fibe Bbigadb.—A meeting of this brigade was held in Mr Braddell's office on Wednesday, 23rd inst. There was a full muster of members and a number of those wishing to join. Mr M. Friedlander was voted to the chair. The treasurer reported having a balance in hand of £l6, the only charge against which was a trilling outlay for painting, &C It was resolved that the services of the brigade be tendered to the Borough Council, aud a deputation was appointed to wait on the Council at its next meeting, and also to ascertain what steps the Council will adopt with reference to the brigade. Water being at present unattainable, it was resolved to have a few dry practices, to accustom the men to their duty, and enable each individual in the event of an alarm to assume his proper post without delay. Presbytebian Church, Sydenham.—A preliminary meeting for conference between the Presbytery's committee and the Presbyterianß of the district was held last evening at the Colombo road schoolroom. The Eev. C. Fraser opened the meeting with prayer, and afterwards stated the action taken by the Presbytery in the direction of forming a new charge. Several eligible sites were mentioned for a church ; but the general feoling expressed was in favor of beginning by having ordinances supplied and the usual organisation of a church established. It was ' agreed to ask the Kev. A. Alexander to preach on the evening of Sabbath, 4th November, and to hold an adjourned meeting immediately ' thereafter. A list of over seventy families reeideat in the district was laid on the table.

Metbopolitan Meeting.—The sale of booths, &c., at the forthcoming Metropolitan meeting will take place on Monday next, at the Commercial Hotel, instead of on Tuesday, as formerly advertised. Panoeama of New Zealand. —This panorama was shown in the Woodend schoolroom on Wednesday evening to a very large and appreciative audience. Many additional views huve been added since last exhibited. Union Rowing Club.—At a committee meeting of the above club, held at Radcliffe's Hotel on Wednesday, the following were elected members :—Messrs Q-. B. Hales, A. H. Author, F. Morten, and A. Bennetts. The following coxswains were also elected : —W. H. Dunnage, F. Triggs, and R. Shakleton. DISTBICT COUBT FOB ASHBUBTON. —On Wednesday His Honor Judge Ward visited Ashburton with the view of engaging a suitable building in which to hold the sittings of the District Court. Bis Honor, accompanied by the legal gentlemen resident in the town, inspected the Town Hall, which was suggested as being suitable for the purpose, Mr Ward seemed perfectly satisfied with the Hall. The South Town Belt. —The meeting of the joint sub-committees of the City Council and the Borough Council of Sydenham is to take place this evening, for the purpose of coming to some arrangement with regard to the formation and keeping in order of the South Town Belt. It is to be hoped that the arrangement will be a satisfactory one. For a long time past the belt has been a sort of "No man's land," and has received very little attention at the hands of any body, the public being the sufferers. Acclimatisation.—A valuable case of exotic and native plants, comprising twelve native ferns, several beautiful variegated plants, new and rare cypresses, firs, and other plants have been supplied by the Domain : Board to the Rev. Mr Hare, of Christchurch College, for transmission to Western Australia in exchange for plants and seeds indigenous to King George's Sound, already received. The collection consists of fifty choice plants. Annivebsaby Day.—The celebration of the anniversary day, as far as the demonstration of the fire brigade is concerned, promises to be more than usually imposing. Some unusual features will be introduced into the torchlight procession, amongst them probably being the electric light, which last year was exhibited from the tower of St. John's Church. Should the Dunedin brigade accept the invitation of their Christchurch brethren to postpone their visit until the anniversary day, greater eclat will be given to the proceedings, and it is not unlikely that a ball may be included in the programme.
