MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, Octobeb 23. [Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M.] Drunk and Disorderly. —Ellen Talbot was fined 4CM.; a first offender was fined ss. Yageahcy. —Helen Anderson and Isabella Leckie were brought up under the Vagrant Act charged with having no lawful visible means of support. Constable Daley stated that on visiting a house in a right-of-way at the back of the Scotch Stores, High street, ho found the prisoners in company with a drunken man. One of the women was asleep, and there were signs of drinking about. Mr F. Jones, of Tuam street, gave evidence that the last tenant of the house left on Monday morning, and he then had it fastened up by a carpenter with a lock and padlock. On Tuesday morning he found the fastenings had been smashed, anc 1 the carpenter he employed to make the repairs found, the prieoners there and gave him information of the fact. On going to the house ho found all the prisoners druuk. His Worship said there was no legal proof that the women had no lawful means of support beyond the fact of their being found in the house, and therefore the case must fall through. The man was simply charged with drunkenness, and had not previously been before the Court. The women were not charged with being drunk. The female prisoners pleaded hard for leniency, and promised amendment. His Worship took a merciful view of the case and discharged the women, and advised the man to go to work. Transfer. —The license of the Criterion Hotel was transferred from George Bird to Robert Wallace. LYTTELTON. Wednesday, October 23. [Before W. Donald, Esq., R.M.] Civil Cases.—-Haider v O’Brien; claim £2 14s 4d, professional assistance. Judgment for amount claimed, with costs 9a. Lyttelton Borough Council v Vincent and Co.; claim £l2 18s, rates due on the Empire Hotel. Mr H. N. Nalder for plaintiffs; Mr Deacon for the defendants. Plaintiff nonsuited, with costa of Court 265.
