additions to hospital. With reference to Mr Harrell’s report on the alterations and improvements required at the Hospital, he expressed his surprise that it should have been forwarded to the Governxnent without being first laid before the Board. It had created a misapprehension as to the extent, and cost of the alterations and additions. Ho had therefore telegraphed to the Government that the report drawn up by the officer appointed had not met with the Board’s approval. The recommendation should have emanated from them, based on Mr Hurrell’s report. Their object now was to examine its details and then draw up their recommendal ions. The then proceeded to the consideration of the report. The following were their recommendations :—That the Board would recommend that a small detached building should bo erected in the south-west corner of the grounds, containing a morgue, 12ft. x 12ft., and a fost-mortcvi room, 18ft. x 12ft., with the arrangements for lighting, &0., as recommended in the Hospital Staff report of October Ist, 1878. That another small building, to consist of one room only, 25ft. x 18ft., be erected between wards Nos. 4 and u, to serve the purposes of an operating and lecture room, and for hospital inquests. The Board having carefully inspected the state of the present kitchen, are of opinion that, from its dilapidated condition, to patch it up further would be a waste of public money, and they therefore recommend tho_ erection of a new one, to bo built of brick, with sleeping accommodation for the servants, as they find at the present that some of the servants have to sleep in outbuildings and in the wards. With respect to closets, the Board recommend that the four closets and urinal should bo built of wood and iron at one-third of the expense. The Board endorsed the remainder of Mr Hurrell’s report. HOUSE SURGEON. It was resolved to defer the appointment of & house surgeon until the full meeting of the Board. TENDERS FOB SUPPLIES. An application was made from the Young Men’s Christian Association, for permission to hold a Wednesday evening weekly service, as formerly, in the men’s convalescent ward. The consideration of the letter was deferred until the first full meeting of the Board in November. HOUSE SURGEON’S BEPOBT. The house surgeon reported that nine patients had been admitted into the Hospital for the week ending October 19th, and there had been six discharges in the same time. A discussion arose on the case of a seaman who was discharged from his ship, in Lyttelton, through sickness, and admitted into the Hospital on the recommendation of Dr. Donald. The secretary was directed to communicate with the Collector of Customs, and ask him to request the Health Officer to inform him when seamen are discharged from their vessels through sickness, in order that the responsibility of their maintenance may be imposed upon the captain of such ship. The house steward reported that some repairs were necessary to the piping which supplied the kitchen with water. The necessary expense was allowed for the repairs required. The creek running through the Hospital grounds was also reported to be in a very foul state, and required cleansing. It was resolved that the prison authorities be asked to have it done by prison labor. The meeting then adjourned.
