It is currently rumored here that the Government has made a concession by which certain parties are to have the exclusive right to a special wire for Press tclesrams, from Auckland to Invercargill, for a period of two years, at a fixed annual payment in lieu of the present Press rates, the special wire to be at the service of the lessees from 8 p.m. to 3 a.m. Ministers decline to give any definite information, hut promise to lay the papers before the House. The Police Pay. Wellington, October 19. It is understood that Ministers have agreed to raise the pay of the police from the Ist J anuary next, but it is not yet known to what extent. Greymouth, October 19. An extraordinary meeting of shareholders of the Greymouth Coal Company, Limited, was held last night, to empower dire:tors to sell the company’s property and plant by auction. There was a large number of shareholders present, and James Kerr was voted to the chair. The following resolutions were carried unanimously:—“That the directors be authorised to sell the mine and property by public auction; that the directors be empowered to pay the debts of the company and divide the balance, if any, amongst, the shareholders, and thereafter take the necessary legal steps to wind up the company ; that offers be taken from the different auctioneers in Greymouth as to terms on which they will sell the company’s property, that the company’s property be sold on November 15th. Dunedin, October 19. The final arrangements re water supply for the city and suburbs bas been deferred till the close of the session. The annual torchlight procession of the Dunedin Fire Brigade took place last night, and was a great success. A new club, called the Union Club, is to be started. Its promoters are recruiting for members among existing clubs. It is estimated that the Tuapeka County Council will show a deficit of £9OO at the close of the year. Two cottages, one owned by William Burns, and tbe other by S. Mewhinay, at Kensington, were burned down last night. A large number of cattle have died in the country districts from eating tutu. Shearing is very backward, and the severe weather will have a bad effect on this year’s clips. It is stated that the snow is far from being melted in the country districts, and that further floods may be looked for. [feom oue own correspondent,] Dunedin, October 19. It is thought that subscriptions to the relief fund will be larger than the committee have need for, and will be closed at once.
