MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. "JVednesday, Octoure 16. fßofore G. L. Hellish, Esq. R.M.I Drunkenness:.— Ellon Talbot was fined 20s. Drunk and Assaulting the Police James Chamberlain was charged with being drunk, making use of obscene language, and assaulting Constable Neil in tho execution of Jxia duty. Constable Neil proved tho three offences, find a fine of 40a was inflicted.
Beyond Control. —Berthold Rosanos Ri, a dogged looking determined lad of fourteen years of age, was brought up under the 13th section, sub-section 5, of the Neglected and Criminal Childrens’ Act, 1867, as being an uncontrollable child. The boy’s father stated the lad continually absented himself from his home, and as he was in failing health he was afraid he would one day be brought home dead. The boy was beyond his control, and he could not keep him at home. Constable Briggs said he found the boy in a paddock off the North town belt, in company with some other boys. The father said he would be willing to pay towards the keep of his son in the Industrial School, but he had an ailing wife and four other children, and the amount his Worship proposed, 7s per week, was beyond his means, without his other children going bare-footed for him. His Worship ordered the boy to bo sent to the Industrial School for twelve months, to he brought up in the Lutheran religion, his father to pay 6s per week for his maintenance. Neglecting to Provide.— The case of Nathaniel Melbourne, which was adjourned from Monday last, was called on, but there was no appearance of the defendant. Mr Colec said the arrears for the maintenance of the throe children of defendant in the Industrial School amounted to £2B, and he was a very slippery individual to get hold of and bring to book. The case was further adjourned that the police might have an opportunity of giving the defendant notice that he must make some arrangement for paying off the arrears due.
LYTTELTON. Wednesday, October 16, [Before W. Donald, Eaq., R.M.] Civil Cases.— Hobbs v Rae, claim £6 4s 10d ;no appearance, Hawkins v Beechey, £22 0s Id, judgment by confession, with costs 18s ; defendant to pay £1 10s per month.
