[peb tbess agency.] Effects of the Floods in Balclutha. Bai.clutha, October 14. The water in the township has not risen quite so high as the flood a fortnight ago. The same streets and an equal extent of the township were covered, but not to the sami depth. The Clutha " Leader" office, Crown Hotel, Criterion Hotel, and several other buildings have not been flooded. The water is now falling slowly, and getting away into the channels commenced last flood, which are widening and deepening. No more buildings are gone, nor is there any extraordinary additional dramage so far as is known. Mr Armstrong, engineer, and Mr Grant, manager of railways, and a number of gentlemen from Dunedin, have been here by special train and inspected the wreck of the railway line and station. The largest viaduct across the lower reserve township is rapidly giving way. A largo gang of workmen have been at work all day with an engine, ! attempting to save the large embankment next the bridge, and believe they will succeed. It is reported that the railway station will probably be removed from the present site to high ground at the end of Larnach street, but nothing is decided. There are several very large channels through the present station yard. Dunedin, October 16.
Mr Thomas Birch has beeii requested to contest the mayoral election. He occupied the position of Mayor formerly. A systematic canvass of the rity will bo made this morning by the floods relief committee. The girl Jane Hamilton, who some time ago was supposed to have been ill-treated by her employer, died in the hospital on Saturday. An inquest was not deemed necessary. The Kaikorai schoolhouse was blown down by Friday's gale. 1 he annual meeting of the Shakspeare Club shows that it has made rapid progress. It now numbers twenty honorary members, and seventeen playing members. Professor Hutton writes to the papers this morning that the Chancellor told him that the Professorial Board had a perfect right to publish their resolution re endowment of the new chair. It is f-tated that the proposed Waggon Company meets with great support from the public. A grand volunteer demonstration will be held on Forbury Park on November 9th. The authorities are determined to have a great massing of the volunteers of the Middle Island on that day. It is expected that 30,000 people will be present.
