MAGISTRATES’ COURT.
CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, October 12. [Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M.] Drunkenness. Ellen Boyle, an old offender, just out of gaol from undergoing a sentence of twelve months, was fined 40s. Drunk and Assaulting Police.—Margaret Maloney and Henry Jordan, who had been remanded yesterday for the attendance of witnesses, were again brought up charged with being drunk and assaulting constable McKay in the execution of his duty. The particulars have been already published. The fresh evidence against the prisoners was that of Hugh McFadyan and William Duncan, who stated that between 12 and 1 a.m., on the 11th instant, they heard a woman screaming, and went to the place in Oxford terrace, between Manchester and Barbadoes streets, from whence the sound appeared to proceed. On arrival, they found constable McKay endeavoring to take the woman to the depot. She was in a state of intoxication and struggling violently, the male prisoner at the same time endeavoring to arrest her. The witness, McFadyan, saw her strike the constable, and the other witness corroborated his evidence. The constable called on them to assist him in the Queen’s name, and they did so, and, with their assistance, the prisoners were conveyed to the depot. Inspector Hickson informed the Bench that complaints had frequently been made of the rowdy character of the house in which the female prisoner lived. The male prisoner was fined 40s and two witnesses expenses 205., and Margaret Maloney was fined 10s for being drunk, and 20s for the assault on the constable. Breach of Debtors and Creditors Act. —James Miller was brought up on a warrant charging him with a breach of the Debtors and Creditors Act. At the request of Inspector Hickson the accused was remanded to Dunedin, where the offence was committed.
