The sweepers were accordingly busily engaged in various parts of the town during the afternoon thoroughly cleaning the long neglected channels. New Hotel. The large family hotel, contemplated by Mr J. E. Coker, will shortly be commenced. It is intended to be erected in Manchester street, and will be fitted with the latest improvements in the shape of furniture, &c. Benhamo and Hayes’ Ciecus.— This circus gave a performance in Lyttelton, on Thursday night, which was very well attended. The N.W. wind, however, considerably interfered with the comfort of both audience and performers. The company sailed for Wellington, per Tararua, yesterday afternoon. Inquest. —An inquest was held yesterday, by Dr Coward, on the body of Rachel Boyd, who died suddenly at Lyttelton on the previous day. The evidence showed that deceased was previously in bad health, and Dr Macdonald attributed her death to suffocation in consequence of the condition of the lungs and heart. The jury returned a verdict of “ Accidental death from suffocation.” The Commissioner of Railways.— Mr W. Theatrical. —On Tuesday evening Madame Cora and Yal Yose, the ventriloquist, will commence a short season at the Gaiety Theatre, The entertainment, which is entitled “ 120 Minutes of Magic, Music, and Mirth,” promises to be of a very attractive character, and will, no doubt, be liberally patronised by those who remember the talented artistes, Madame Cora and Val Yose, on their last appearance in Christchurch, though they now appear for the first time in their combined performance. Agricultural and Pastoral. —At the last general meeting of the committee of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, it was resolved to supply a much needed want at the Annual Show of the Association, namely, loose boxes for draught entire horses. Up to the present time animals of this class, intended for exhibition, had to be stabled at the various stables in the city, and brought to the show grounds on the morning of the show, and then led about the grounds during the day. Twenty boxes are now rapidly being proceeded with, and will be ready in time for the fortbcoisisg show.
