The rise in the Home wool market has had a beneficial effect on prices here. Scoured is now quoted at Is 4d to Is 7d ; fleece, washed, Is and Is 2d ; greasy, sjd to 6|d. Large shipments have been made from Port Elizabeth. Hides are depressed, 2id to 3id being the average, while skins have lately had a hardening tendency. Good mohair is in demand at Is 8d to Is 9id ; mixed and middling Is 2d to Is 4jd. The Sunbeam, which left here on July 6th for Lyttelton, took 500 boxes ruhins. Tho market for this and other dried fruits is high, good samples being scarce. Raisins are now bringing 4d per lb ; apricots, to lid ; pears, sd; poaches, Is. Wheat is quoted at 27s to 28s 6d per 200 lbs, and flour at 19s to 20s per 100 lbs. Generally trade has improved and money remains plentiful. The rebellion on tbe northern frontier has been crushed, and one of the leading chiefs adjudged to pay a'heavy fine for the murder of Mr Thomson by members of his tribe. Several of the chiefs concerned in the frontier war have been tried upon charges of sedition and high treason, and two, Gongobella and Tmi Maccomo, have been sentenced to death. The state of affairs in the Transvaal is still evry unsatisfactory, desultory fighting and cattle lifting continue. General Thesiger has gone to Natal with the avowed object of bringing Cety wayo, the Zulu King, to book, and Sir Bartle Frero is expected to go to Putona very shortly. Mr Spxry, the Premier, addressing a public meeting at Grahamstown last week, declared himself in favor of confederation by means of several local legislatures under a central Government. Confederation is to he the cry at the ensuing general election.
