A 0 F. —'T'he quarterly summoned meeting of the Court Star of Canterbury will be held on Monday evening. Governor’s Bay.—The steam launch l yttelton is advertised tVrun to Governor’s Bay to-morrow Canterbury Gaols. —On September 30th there were 95 persons imprisoned in the Lyttelton, 52 in the Addington, and 25 in the I'imaru Gaol, or a total of 172. On the 31st August, the total number in the three Gaols was 168,
The Lost Cash-box. The cash-box, found near the residence of Captain Wilson, on the bank of the river, has been identified as one of those stolen from Mrs Bradwell’s by Stanton, who is awaiting his trial for burglary. Tub Tug- Lyttelton. A report was read at the meeting of the Harbor Board yesterday showing the result of the trial trip of the now steam tug Lyttelton, which has just been completed at home to the order of the Harbor Board, The tug was to leave England for NeW Zealand on August last. . Gaiety Theatre. —Mr Hydes gave another performance last evening at the Gaiety Theatre. The bill comprised the comedy of “ Checkmate,” under the new and somewhat peculiar title of “Euchred,” a song by Mr D’Elmaine, Mr Wallace’s balancing feats, and the burlesque of “La Sonnambula.” To-night a change is announced. Lyttelton Colonists’ Society. —The general meeting of subscribers for the nomination of officers and committee for the ensuing year took place at the Colonists’ Hall, Lyttelton, on Thursday evening. The following gentlemen were nominated ;—President, Mr H. C. Jacobson ; vice-president, Mr J. C. Boddington; treasurer, Mr W. H. Lance ; committee, Messrs H. R. Webb, J. T. Rouse, H. N. Nalder, A. Joyce, C. A. Rich, S. C. Phillips, A. Bunker, J. G. Pyfe, R. Kingsford, G. Tayler, W. H. Eyes, W. Hannay. The meeting then adjourned. I Supreme Court. —The annual sessions of the Supreme Court open on Monday next, before his Honor Mr Justice Johnston. As some misapprehension appears to exist as to the time at which witnesses, jurors, &c., are required to bo in attendance, it may be well to remind them that the Court opens at 10 a.m. Since the calendar was published, two other commitments have been made—that of S. L. Dennis for larceny of a cash-box, and a man at Ashburton for obtaining goods on false pretences. These bring the total number pf cases for trial up to fourteen. Concert at LytteltoH. — A capital concert, in aid of the funds of the Lyttelton Colonists’ Society, was given at the Colonists’ Hall, Lyttelton, on Thursday evening. Friends from Christchurch gave the whole performance, which comprised altogether sixteen items, the performers being Messrs Knox, Crawford, Sponsley and Seager, and the Misses Spensley. It is needless to say that the various items were admirably rendered, the instrumental pieces being given by Mr Bonnington’s band. There was a good attendance, and those present were so enthusiastic that repeated encores were given, which were kindly responded to. Waimakaeiei Overflow. —Yesterday Mr Dobson, at the request of the Kaiapoi Borough Council, inspected the overflow of the Wa,imakariri between Chainey’s and Kaiapoi, as far as it affects the eastern portion of the borough. The Mayor, Crs. Mathews, Moorp, and Schmidt went with Mr Dobson in a boat out of the main river up the new channel past Mr Fantham’s, over which the new railway bridge is to bo built. At the mouth of the’channel, and for some distance to the railway line, there was a depth of about 15ft. of water. Mr Dobson’s report will be received and considered in connection with the discussion ‘on the whole question at an adjourned meeting of the Council to be held on Monday evening.
