In the House last night, Mr Ballance briefly moved the second reading of the Customs Tariff Bill, which was agreed to on the voices, and the House went into committee on the Bill. Considerable discussion took place on clause 4, Mr Woolcock endeavoring to obtaining the omission of the duty on sugar, treacle, and molasses. Mr Bowen moved that the clause be struck out altogether. Mr Woolcock's amendment was lost by 38 to 21. The clause was then passed without amendment. The remaining clauses of the Bill wore then passed without amendment. In the first schedu'e Mr Saundebs moved that the 2s] Gil duty on flour sacks be struck out, but it was retained by 20 to 21. In schedule 2, after some discussion, Mr Ballance agreed to include timber in the list of articles on which all duty waa to be removed.

Mr J. E. Brown hoped the grain growers of the South and timber cutters in the North Island would not be laid at the feet of Tasmanian timberysellers on the one hand, and Californian grain growers on the other. After considerable discussion, the item " grain " was retained by 25 against 19. Mr Turnbull moved that the next item "grain ground" be struck out, but the amendment was lost by 24 to 17. On the motion of Mr Ballance, the words "timber, sawn palings, shingles, and laths" were inserted on the voices. The question was then put that the schedule as amended passed. Mr Macfarlane called for a division, and the schedule was carried by 27 to 11. The Bill was then reported, and ordered to be read a third time on Thursday. The House adjourned at 1.30.
