SINGULAR PROCEEDINGS WITH GAS LIGHTS.
To the Editor of the Glooe.
Sib, —Having had occasion to be traversing a street in Christchurch at a quarter before two o'clock in the morning lately, I was preceded by an individual who, very considerately, extinguished the gas-lights, thus leaving your unfortunate correspondent in the dark. Yesterday afternoon, at a quarter to five, I was passing along the same street, when I met a man (very likely the individual abovementioned) who was lighting the lamps, although—absurd aB it may seem—the sun was shining brightly high in the heavens. By whose authority, whether that of the City Council or the Gas Company, these unreasonable and strange procsedings take place, lam not able to say, but beg to suggest, through your journal, to the authority, whoever it may be, that the lamps may be lighted at seven o'clock in the evening and extinguished at four in the morning, thus saving two hours' useless waste of gas in the evening, and giving two hours' useful expenditure of light in the morning. Yours, &c, INSPECTOR.
