MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, October 1. [Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M.] Drunkenness.—A first offender was fined ss.
Neglected Family. «. Michael Jordan, remanded from Palmerston, was charged with neglecting to provide his wife and child with adequate means of support. Mrs Jordan, on entering the witness box, and about to be sworn, said that she wished to withdraw the charge. In answer to Mr Inspector Bickson, she said that she had make up her mind to withdraw the charge on entering the Court. Mr Inspector R'ickson said that this was a cheap and easy way for a woman to get her husband back again from a distance at the expense of the country, and he hoped his Worship would make an order for the defendant to pay the expenses of the present proceedings before allowing the charge to be withdrawn. Further questioning proved that when'the defendant left his wife last August, it was with her knowledge, although he did not say where he was going, and he did not leave her altogether unprovided for, but had not communicated with her sinoe. Taking the circumstances into consideration, and as the police knew nothing against the character of the defendant, his Worship said he would allow the charge to be withdrawn, and the complainant and defendant left the Court together.
