On the arrival of the s.s. Taranaki tbis morning Captain Malcolm reported having sighted v. fnllrigged ship, with the main skysail set, abont twelve miles to the eastward of East Head. There was little or uo wind, but the light airs that prevailed were favorable for the ship. Captain Malcolm believes the vessel is bound here, and it is generally supposed to be the New Zealand Shipping Co.'a ship Waimate, Captain Peek, now due. The chairman of directors and general manager of tbo frew Zealand Shipping Co., with other gentlemen interested, went to the Heads in the ps. Titan to ascertain if the ship reported was really the Waimate. No signal was made up to the time our express left port. SAILING OP THE MEROPE. The Lyttelton ship Merope—as one may almost call her, from the fact that she has been trading regularly to this port since she was launched—sailed early yesterday moming, for the first time going in ballast. She proceeds to Melbourne, where she joads np for London, and we have every hope of seeing her here again, as usual, next season with a cargo from home. Captain Sutherland and his chief officer (Mr Thomas) are not only well known but well liked in Canterbury, and carry with them the best wishes of numerous friends, •nd many of those holding humble positions aboard have been here time after time, and gained the respect and esteem of many residents in Pert. We wish the Merope a quick passage to Melbourne, a good freight home, and a speody return to Lyttelton, SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. Auckland, September 18.
