[FBB PBBBB AGENCY. J Auckland, September 16. The petition against Mr Curtis' Bill to legalise denominational education, placed in circulation on Friday last, has already received the signatures of 2000 adult*. It will be sent to Mr Swanson by the Taiaroa, and, if necessary new petitions will be circulated, it being estimated that 5000 signatures might be obtained in the city and suburbß alone within a week. * Mr Delias has made arrangements for Mr Chaplin's southern tour. He leaves per Taiaroa to-morrow, and opens at Christchurch on Monday. Wellington, September 16. The " Gazette " to-night will contain regulations altering the rates of postages. Any articles of merchandise, raw or manufactured, not dangerous, may be sent by 'parcel post; also seeds, cuttings, bulbs, and roots, the postage to be one penny per two ounces. Manuscript intended for publication may be sent at book-post rates. No book packet is to be sealed or otherwise closed against inspection. Legal documents may be sent by book-post. These changes are to come into force from the 4th instant. Dunbdin, September 16. The police have received a telegram from Switzer's that Mrs Welsh, of the Waikawa station, has been murdered by her husband, who is not yet arrested. Andrew Eeid, of the Hit-or-Miss Hotel, was again charged with sly-grog selling today. Judgment was reserved. The City Council elections to-day resulted in the return of the following candidates: — South Wards Fish, Roberts, and Gore. LeithWard: Aldrich, Isaac, and Doughtey. High Ward: Mackinnon, Walter, and Webb. Invebcabgill, September 16. A land furore is raging here. Speculators from Dunedin and Christchurch are buying up at fancy prices. A great deal of land, both Crown and private, has changed hands during this week, and it is said that the Waste Lands Board will be deluged with applications this week. As a rule, buyers are agreeably surprised with the quality of the land. The steamer Oreti grounded whilst entering New River yesterday afternoon, and remained hard and fast all night on a mud bank. She did not get off this morning, and it is reported she is seriously injured. A report came to the polico this morning of a horrid murder at Waikawa. A man named Welsh is said to have killed his wife. Particulars are not to hand.

A miner named John Campbell, one of the tributers of the Moanatairi mine, is supposd to have absconded to Sydney by the Hero under an assumed name, wita the proceeds of the late crushing, £75. The contractors are making progress on the Auckland section of the Kaipara railway. Plate-laying will commence immediately. A settler of the Whau, named Thomas Hicks, died suddenly. The friends of the Rev. Geo. Brown here have received no communication from him or the Sydney mission authorities relative to the the recent massacre in New Britain. Reference was made to the affair yesterday in the Wesleyan churches. The Wangarei constituents of Sir Robert Douglas are taking steps to counteract his alleged misrepresentation of their views on the education question. Timabu, September 16.
Benhamo's Circus, which was announced to open to-night, did not turn up. A large crowd assembled, and great disgust was felt in consequence. Active steps are being taken to work the coal seams discovered a short time since close to Albury railway station. The supply is believed to be almost inexhaustible, while the quality is declared equal to the Greymouth coal.
