The news of the motion for a committee of inquiry re Major Mair’s and Mr Searancke’s abrupt dismissal, was received hero with groat favor, as it is felt, among the natives especially, that a wrong is being committed, as it is generally known that these gentlemen were the first to break up the aukatis. Mr Searancke years ago, at the first meeting after the war, arranged for a meeting at Tokangamutu between the Government and the King. All say that Major Mair should bo allowed to complete this work, that
is until all differences are settled between them and the Government. Dunedin, September 16. At a public meeting at Kaitangata, on Saturday, a resolution recommending that the Kaitangata lakes should be sold, subject to certain conditions, was agreed to. The carnival in aid of the Benevolent Institution has realised £1563. An auction will bo held, and the committee expect to hand over £I7OO or £IBOO to the Institution.
Settlers at Brighton and the Coast district are agitating for a loop line of railway from Green Island to Milton.
