PARLIAMENTARY ITEMS.
[Br Telegraph.] [PBMO THE COEEESPONDENT OF THE PEES3,] FEOGRESS OF BUSINESS. Every one is remarking on the extremely backward condition of public business. MR WOOLCOCK’s MOTION. The whole of Friday afternoon was occupied by a debate on the amendment moved by Mr Woolcock on the original motion for going into Committee of Supply. The only speech, however, worthy of any special notice was that of the Native Minister, in which he, with his usual good nature, twitted the Opposition with their conduct during the last and present sessions. He openly urged those who might bo considered to be the waverers in the Ministerial ranks to remain staunch in their support whatever might be the measures brought down by the present Government, and entreated them to regard the Opposition as wolves in sheep’s clothing, and not, on any account, to have anything to say to them. Mr Ormond followed, and in speaking with reference to the late trip to the South, remarked that the Government had come back to Wellington feeling very sick, because of certain things that had been brought forward at Dunedin and Christchurch in praise of Sir Julius Vogel, ami owing to the manner in which tho latter had been everywhere belauded, whilst the present Premier was never so much as mentioned. Mr Ormond strongly denounced the Government proposals us the Charter of Humbug, and described the Premier’s stump speeches as the biggest bunkum and rubbish ever talked to a New Zealand mob. PAPERS. No papers of any particular interest or of special importance to Canterbury, have been today distributed. Tho report of the Dunedin University is expected very shortly.
