[eeuter’s special telegrams to TUB PEESB AGENCY.] Svdney, September 9. \ rrived—Wakatipu. Edwards unsuccessfully attempted to walk 110 miles in twenty-four hours. He succeeded in doing 102 miles. Melbourne, September 9. The Underwriters’ Association report the arrival at Hong Kong on the 4th August of the three-masted schooner May, from Wellington. She sailed for Wellington on sth September.

Samoan papers report the flogging of a native for a drunken assault on a European. The Native Judge stated it was his intention to suppress all outrages on foreign residents in a similar way.

Re the murder of the Maori- woman at Waiapu, the Natives gave up as a prisoner one of the men implicated, a half-caste named Henare Peti. The other man being a chief, was only seat down as a witness, After the
two had pone to Gisborne, Inspector Scully arrived at Waiapu, and finding that no inquest had been held ho communicated with the authorities on the subject, and in consequence the two Natives and Mr Kenrick, the coroner, go up from Gisborne to Waiapu to-night, Inspector Scully says he will try to have the woman’s body exhumed, though it is against Maori custom.
Dunedin, September 9. Mr Justice Williams leaves for Christ' church to-morrow, to assist Mr Justice John ston in the case Avon Road Board v. Govern ment.
During the month gnding the sth instant the Dunedin Immigration Office received nominations for 118 persons, equal to 108 £ statute adults. Two thousand three hundred and seventyeight persons paid for admission to the Benevolent Institution’s carnival on Saturday. Mr Watt, EM,, and Inspector Mallard attended at the Waverley Boarding house this afternoon to take the depositions of Mary Hamilton, 13 years of ago. She had been in the employment of the postmaster at Kaitangata, but came to (own by the night train on Saturday and went to the hoarding-house. The proprietor finding her in a very emaciated state obtained medical assistance, and as doubts of her recovery were entertained her depositions were taken to-day. She says that she was overworked, and hence she left her place. Nominations for the City Council took place to-day. The candidates for South Ward are —Messrs Cuzens, Fish, Gore, and Roberts; for the High Ward, Messrs Barron, McKinnon, Walter, and Webb ; for Leith Ward, Messrs Doughty, Jas. Russell, Aldrich, Isaac, and Grant; for Hill Ward, Messrs Carroll, Thompson, and Woodland were elected. Mr Reeves was nominated for Leith Ward, but the papers were-informal.

The Baker and Farron troupe are [drawing good houses. William H. Campbell alias Captain Taylor, was brought up under five charges of obtaining money by false pretences, as a “ distressed mariner,” Ho received four months for each offence. TIMARU, September 9. A further inquiry re the wreck of the barque Melrose will bo held before the Resident Magistrate and assessors on Wednesday. The grounds for this are that the captain did not cut his cables after the anchors parted, and so prevented his vessel from going well upon the beach. The weather for the last two days has been exceptionally wet and the rivers very high.
