Inspector Scully has received a telegram from Sergeant White, stationed at Gisborne, stating that to-morrow morning he will proceed to Waiapu, accompanied by Constable Walsh and Sergeant Ballard of the A.C., the latter to act as interpreter, to take steps for the arrest of the murderer of the Native woman, to which Mr Sheehan referred in the House on Wednesday afternoon. Foxton, September 5. The ketch Huon Belle, Captain Reams, from Wanganui to Greymouth, went ashore five miles north of Foxton at five this morning. A heavy gale from the westward is blowing. All hands were saved. The vessel is in ballast. Dunedin, Sept. 5. Messrs Blair and Conyers' report, re Dunedin Kail way Station, has been received, and appears to favor the Harbor Board's plan. It states that, inasmuch as the Board's site for the goods station is nearer tho passenger station and proposed import dock, tho northern site has tho advantage. Their only serious objection to the Board's plan is that it encroaches seven chains on the lino of reclamation marked by Sir John Coode. Mr Bathgate, R.M., decided to-day that brewers cannot recover tho value of beer supplied knowingly to sly grog sellers. A public meeting will be held to-morrow night for arranging as to suitablo candidates to be nominated for the City Council. [PBOM THB COBBESPONDENTS OP THE PBESS.] Timabu, September 5. The nominated immigration list from Timaru this month comprises fifty-four souls, equal to forty-nine adults. The underwriters of the brigantine Lap. wing have contracted with Alien and Stumbles to get her afloat. ■H The Court of Enquiry concluded to-day. The decisions were not made known. It is believed the case of the Melrose will go to a iigher Court. The evidence showed she was utterly unfit to go to sea, although passed by Sjloyd's surveyors at Sydney four months ago. . . . The public meeting to-night re municipal matters was simply an ignominious failure. No result was arrived at, and the speakers were greeted with derision and a running fire of sarcasm, j Dunedin, September 6. Pegasus furnishes the " Star" with racing statistics 1877-8. They show an increase last year of thirty-one meetings and £5003. In stakes Otago gave £8240; Canterbury, £6190; Auckland, £6097; Wellington, £4320; Napier, £1685. Kay is credited with winning £2490 ; Kedwood, £2401; Walters, £1460 : Stead, £1332; McGee, £1297; Farmer, £BBS ; Lunn, £825; O'Brien, £582. Templeton heads the list of winners with £1510; Ariel, £1236; Trump Card, £1142. Of winnings the sireJTraducer again heads the list, with over £IO,OOO to his credit, of which amount the fifteen sons and daughters of his in the above table won £6698, the remainder being earned by innumerable smaller winners. Dainty Ariel is again second, but a long way off, with £3500. The defunct Towton has had only £IBOO won by his descendants, while Ravensworth, : who wasihigh up tho previous year, had no/winners of importance last season. Dead Shot, who promised well as a sire, but who unfortunately died]a few months ago, waß represented by Mata and Chokebore, who ■won £865 between them.
