BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The Board of Education for the district of North Canterbury met yesterday, at 3 p.m. Present—Messrs A. Duncan, A. Saunders, H. R. Webb, and Key. C. Fraser. In the absence of the chairman (Mr John Inglis), Mr A. Duncan occupied the chair. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. NEW MEMBER. The following was the result of the election for the scat at the North Canterbury Educational Board, vacant by the icsignation of Mr W. Rolle.ton :—Mr E. C. J. Stevens, 19 votes ; Mr George Booth, 16 ; Mr A. H. Cunningham, 10 ; the Rev. J. M'lntosh, 6. Mr E. C. J. Stevens was, therefore, duly elected. TENDERS. Tenders were sent in for a quantity of repairs, additions, &c, for certain schools. The following tenders were accepted : —Bingsland, Messrs Jackson and Manson; Kew Brighton, Messrs Jackson and Manson; Hillsborough, Messrs Jackson and Manson ; Killinchy, Mr Bennett. Governor's bay. A letter was read from the contractors, asking for an extension of time in carrying out their contract. The request was granted. prebbleton. A voucher for an account for certain works in connection with Prebbleton school, was certified to and passed. LOWER HEATHCOTE. An application was received from the master, asking for additional rooms to his house. Referred to Mr Cane, to report at tho next meeting of the Board. MALVERN. The report of Mr Cane on the Malvern school buildings was read. EAST CHRISTCHTJRCH. A letter was read from the acting chairman of the East Christchurch school committee, in reply to a communication from the Board, stating their intention of appointing Mr John Curnow as head master of the Gloucester street school, an requesting an expression of opinion from the school committee on the appointment. The acting chairman's reply stated that at a meeting held last Friday the members of the school committee deemed it inadvisable to offer any remarks on the application, in view of their duties shortly ceasiDg. Mr John Ingli3 at this stage came in, and took his seat as chairman. EAST OXFORD. The Rev. Mr Opie, cbairman of the school committee, waited on the Board, and explained that they were in arrears from unavoidable causes and heavy expenses, and requested a grant of d£2s to assist them. Tho Board promised to consider the matter, and let the committee know their decision as early a 3 possible. UPPER HEATHCOTE. A letter was read from this school committee referring to the appointment of Mrs Langbridge as assistant teacher. The Board agreed to leave Mrs Langbridge as assistant teacher for three months. KAIAPOI. The school committee made ah application to the Board for additional ventilation to the school. The Chairman stated that Mr Cane had reported on tho matter, but at the present time the Board had no available funds at its disposal for the proposed work. G REBUTARK. The Secretary stated tbat he had written to tho school committee who had threatened to resign through their inability to carry out certain proposed works, asking them to reconsider their determination. Tho Board approved of the plans submitted for tho work, but had not at present funds to ciin-y it out, but the matter would not lie lost sight of when the necessary funds were available. TIN'WALO. The Board approved of the school site at Tinwald recommended by Mr A. Saunders. WEST CHRIST/CHURCH. Tho Board granted an outlay of £ls to this school, Mr Cano having reported favourably on the reasonableness of'the committee's application. COLOMBO ROAD. The Board refused an application from tins school for gas fittiogs. Tho Board went into committee, and adjourned at an early hour.
