TO-DAY'S DOINGS.
The steamers Hinemoa and Taupo arrived early this morning, bringing down our colonial representatives, and others, to take part in the opening of the railway from Christchurch to Dunedin. The parly lmd a terrible shaking on the w»y down, for the wind blow most violent, but fortunately it was in i'avor of the excursionists. In town to-day, one could hardly proceed a dozen yards without rubbing shoulders with a "miniber of Parliament," while the presence of so many members of the Upper House, the Ministry, and his Excellency the Governor, hare given Christchurch a spice of haut ton to which it has long been a stranger. In honor of the occasion, the town has been ablaze with bunting, and but for a strong wind blowing, and as usual raising clouds of dust, the weather may be considered to have been pleasant. The Museum was re-opened at noon by Im Excellency the Governor, who was met at the door by Mr Montgomery, the Chairman of the Board of Governors, and a large number of the members of the College. By this party he was escorted into the new hall of the Museum, which was found to be occupied by a large crowd of ladies and gentlemen, among them being a considerable proportion of members of Parliament, and other Northern visitors. His Excellency then proceeded to declare the Museum open, and made a short and appropriate address. Great preparations are being made for the banquet at the Provincial Council Chambers this evening, and from what wo can hear there is likely to be a very crowdsd gathering. Indeed it is very questionable whether all those invited will be able to find so its. The reporters and the band will bo put into one gallery, and ladies and others will be admitted to the strangers' gallery. The affair promisee to be a great success
