LICENSING COURT.
The Qarterly Licensing Court was hold at noon to-day, the following Commissioners being on the Bench G. L, Mollish, R.M.j H. J. Tancrod, and R. J. S. Harman, Esqs. NEW APPLICATIONS. The following new applications were dealt with : J. 11. Andrews, for a hotel in the Ferry road. Refused. Wm. H. Bennett, for the Al, corner Colombo and Cashel streets. Inspector Hickson reported that the house was not quite finished. The Bench considered that a grea t deal of unnecessary delay had taken place. Mr Thomas urged that the building would be completed in ten days. Refused. J. A. Coker, for a new hotel to be built at the junction of Manchester and George street. Mr Thomas appeared for Mr Coker, and stated that the intention was to make the house a strictly family, hotel. The plans did not show any bar accommodation for the outside public, but showed suites of rooms for boarders. Mr Coker had conducted a large hotel at Wellington most satisfactorily. The proposed hotel would bo built of brick, and stuccoed. Mr Widdowson, as an owner of land close to the proposed hotel, opposed the application, and produced a petition numerously signed against it. Ho urged that already there are live licensed houses very near the spot. The Court expressed a willingness to favorably entertain the application, provided the plans were amended. A. Hamilton applied for a license for a now hotel at the junction of Kilmoro and Barbadoes street. Mr Thomas appeared to support, and Mr Garrick to oppose, the application. Refused. R. Hamilton, for the Marino Hotel at Sumner. The license had been refused at the last meeting, because necessary alterations in the building had not been made. Refused. Stephen Lawrence, for a new house in Colombo street south, Sydenham. The Court considered there was already sufficient accoipmodation of this class in the neighborhood, and refused the application. William Muff, for a hotel in Bingsland. Mr Thomas appeared to support the application. The plans by Mr Lambert were approved of by the Court, who complimented that gentleman upon them and the plans of the nest hotel. Thomas Poole applied for a new house to be built at Sumner, Mr Wynn Williams appeared to support the application, and stated that the house, which would bo built of wood, would contain no fewer than 132 rooms. The Court said that if provision were made to allow the inmates to escape easily in case of fire, and to prevent the rapid spread of a coniligration, they would favorably entertain the application. In answer to a question, Mr Poole said that half the building -would be completed in three months hence. .John Somers, for a house partly built in Colombo street South, opposite the Show Grounds. Mr H. H. Loughnan appeared to support the application. Refused. ALTEEATION OF NAME, An application to alter the name of “ The Warwick Castle ” to the “Queens ” was made by W. R. Smith, and granted. WINE AND BEEK LICENSES. The applicatiou of E, Bourgeois of the Grand Cafe Fraiujais, Cashel street, was granted. Mr H. H, Loughimu, appeared for the applicant. G. P. Kissell, of Templeton. Mr Thomas appeared to support the applieatiou. Mr Simmons opposed it, but us ho had sent no notice of his intention to object ho was not heard. ger for His Lordship’s Larder, Lichfield street, was granted. Thomas Poole applied for a wine and beer license for the Palace Dining Rooms, in High street. Mr H. H. Loughnan supported the application, which was refused, CONFIRMATION OF LICENSE. The following transfers were confirmed: — J. Barlow to E. Amyes, Papanui Hotel. S. Freeman to J. Bartlett, Caledonian, and R. Kelt to Barlow, Albion. The Clerk to the Bench was directed to give notice to the holder of the license formerly held by Fitzgerald in Newton to produce his license at an adjourned meeting, and to call upon him to show cause why hia license should not be cancelled.
