CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, August 31. [Before Q. L. Hellish, Esq., R.M.] Drunkenness. —Robert Hort was fined 10s, and Johanna Mahoney was fined 40s. Larceny. —John Turner was charged with stealing three pairs of trousers valued at £3 14s the property of M. D. Barsht. Thomas Yates, shoemaker, deposed—l saw prisoner about half-past eight yesterday evening take a pair of trousers that were hanging outside Mr Barsht’s shop, put them under his coat, and run away. I ran after him and caught him, but his coat gave way, and he got away He let the trousers produced, fall. Morris I). Barsht, clothier, of Colombo street, confirmed the evidence already given. Before the last witness had told him that prisoner had taken some trousers, witness had missed two other pairs. The three pairs produced were witness’s property. John W. Connolly deposed that he had found two of the pairs of trousers produced in the urinal of the “City.” A constable proved the arrest of prisoner, who admitted that he had taken one pair, and said that beer was the cause of his theft. Prisoner’s father here asked Ins Worship to take a lenient view of the case. The lad was only 1(1 and had alvsavs been honest. Inspector Hickson said that prisoner, when in the lockup, appeared to be sincerely sorry for what ho had done. The father was a most respectable man. His Worship regretted that prisoner was 17, as lie was too old to receive a Hogging and bo let go. He must be imprisoned, though for a short time. The sentence would be imprisonment for one week with hard labor. His Worship directed that prisoner should bo kept separate from the other prisoners. LYTTELTON. [Before W.
