THE CITY ELECTION.
To the Editor of the Globe,
Sib, —In the “Lyttelton Times” of this morning the following paragraph appears Corporation ITEMS.—Councillor Briggs has given instructions to the Town Clerk that no information is to be furnished by him or any other Corporation official to the newspapers. As this statement is calculated to injure my chance of ro-eloction, I trust you will spare me room to give the report a flat contradiction. Information of a private nature having found its way into the local papers to the detriment of the interests of the City, the Finance Committee on Monday last suggested that in future information to the reporters should only be given by the City Surveyor or Town Clerk. They did not even go the length of giving this as an instruction, but merely made the suggestion. Of course no such order could be made without a resolution of the Council, therefore the absurdity of the paragraph is apparent. When next the Lyttelton Times wish to publish something detrimental to my candidature, I hope they will have truth for the foundation of their remarks. Yours, Ac., CHARLES E. BRIGGS.
