Major Gordon, formerly commanding the Auckland Volunteers, has been appointed to command the Otago Volunteer force. They appear to be taking a leaf out of the book of the Napier repudiation party. Captain Fraser and Superintendent Thomson have been investigating the charge of Mrs M'Manus against the Thames police for illtreatment of her daughter when under arrest. Timaeu, August 28. _ There is great excitement over the Municipal elections. Thirteen persons were nominated to-day to fill the five vacant seats. A telegram, however, having since been received from Wellington that the proclamation dividing the borough into wards will appear in to morrow’s “Gazette,” these nominations go for nothing, as a general election of the Council will have to take place. Great satisfaction is expressed here with regard to the Public Works statement. Arrangements are being made to give a fitting reception to visitors on the opening of the railway. It is reported in town that a man and woman have been nearly burnt to death somewhere about Albury while burning tussocks. Later. Information from Albury says that Edwards and wife went out to burn tussocks on the farm. The flames spread rapidly, and Edwards told his wife to make for _ home. She did so while he started to extinguish the flames. He was fearfully burnt, and on his way home found his wife lying insensible, face downward, on the burnt ground,. She was burnt from head to foot. He carried her home, and sent word to town. She died this morning before medical assistance arrived, and he is now in the Hospital, not expected to live. They were only just married. Dunedin, August 28. Somerville, a shepherd, left Shannon station on the 31st of July for Ida Valley station. His dog returned some days after, and he never reached his destination. The body of a man, not yet identified, was found in the Mataura, near Wyndham. The Mayor has accepted the responsibility of entertaining his Excellency and the members of Parliament, but the City Council, in view ol the increased expenses to which he has been subjected during the year, intend voting such ah addition to his salary as will assist in meeting the outlay. The banquet is to be held in Guthrie and Larnaeh’s new warehouse. It is expected that over 300 will be present. Mercer’s liabilities are over £4OOO. “
