At a crowded meeting to-night in testimony of admiration for the labours of Gladstone and the leaders of the Liberal party in England, it was decided to send a congratulatory address. NEW ZEALAND TELEGRAMS. [PEE PBESS AGENCY.] Auckland, August 27. The Jockey Club adopted the following programme for the summer meeting : ) First day—Railway Plate, £SO ; Auckland /Cup, £300; Hurdle Race, £SO j Maiden Plate, £80; Hurry Scurry, £lO. Second day—Derby, £IOO ; Publican's Purse, £6O; Selling Race, £SO ; Racing Club Handicap, £200; Hack Hurdle Race, £10; Grand Stand Handicap, £IOO. Third day—Mares' Produce Stakes, £IOO ; Auckland Plate, £100; Steeplechase, £l5O ; Stewards' Cup, £IOO ; Consolation, £4O. Wellington, August 27. It is understood that the Government do not intend to make the office of Sheriff any longer a special appointment. It is expected that the next " Gazette " will contain a notification that all the Registrars of the Supreme Courts will, by virtue of their office, act as Sheriffs of their respective districts. Dunedin, August 27. The City Council to-day resolved to ask the Government to sanction without delay the Silverstream Water Supply scheme. The Council also resolved to obtain the services of an eminent gas engineer, to report upon the gas question. At a meeting of the Licensed Victuallers' Association to-night it was resolved to draw up a petition for presentation to Parliament against the beer tax. The action of the Government was strongly censured, and the chief blame attributed to Mr Stout. Port Chalmebs, August 27. The cutter Mormaid has just arrived from Purakanui. The master, Captain Fargie, reports that at 030 p.m. to-day the vessel jibed, and the boom striking a man named Christian, a Norwegian, aged between thirtyfive and forty, carried him overboard, fie Bank rapidly, and nothing was afterwarde seen of him. Captain Fargie lowered the boat and went in search of the man, without avail. [fbom the ooebespondent of THE PBESS.] Dunedin, August 27. The Interprovincial Football match play commences at 2.30. Rolland has been substituted for A. Y. Smith. Work on the Tapanui railway commenced to-day. The Dunedin Fire Brigade has instructed the secretary to write to the various Fire Brigades between Dunedin and Christchurch, inquiring if it is their intention to visit Dunedin on the occasion of the opening of through railway communication. At Queenßtown a young man named Fred. Daniels was thrown from his horse, and died two hours afterwards. The Mayors of Oamaru and Dunedin exchanged congratulatory telegrams on the linking in of the line. The whole of the City Council intend to accept Mayor Thomson's invitation. At the Council meeting to-day, the Mayor reported that the Bank of New Zealand here have received advice of the floating of the first portion of the municipal loan very satisfactorily to the corporation, and far better than the 6per cent debentures of last year. There are 5301 votes on the municipal roll of the city this year.
