HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARD.
The Board held their usual weekly meeting on Saturday, at 7 p.m. Present —The Mayor of Sydenham and Dr. Turnbull. In the absence of the chairman, the Mayor of Sydenham was moved to the chair. An application was made by Thomas Marr for the removal of his brother, Frederick Marr, aged fourteen, from the Orphan Asylum. The matter was referred to the secretary to inquire into and report. jASHBUETON HOME The Chairman reported that he had inspected the building at Ashburton which had been prepared and furnished for the reception of the late aged and infirm inmates from the Selwyn Home. The inspection was made on Friday last, in company with Mr J, E. March, and everything was found to be in a very satisfactory condition. Thirty-two inmates had been located there. Arrangements had also been made, subject to the approval of the Government, for the attendance of Dr. Trevor at the depot, at a salary of £SO per annum. DISPENSING. A letter was read from the Colonial Secretary re dispensing for the Female Refuge, Home, and Charitable Aid, and inquiring if the dispensing for all the outside institutions could be carried on at a moderate cost, and what that cost would be. It was resolved that the secretary should enquire of the chemists at what rate they would be prepared to dispense medicines for the above outside institutions, the number of prescriptions being about 3000 per annum. DUNEDIN HOSPITAL. A letter was read from the Secretary of the Dunedin Hospital, forwarding a statement of receipts and expenditure of the Dunedin Hospital for the six months ending June 30th, 1878, and asking for a similar return showing the expenditure of the Christchurch Hospital for the corresponding period. From the statement, it appeared that the daily average number of in-patients was 118, and out-patients 24. The total expenditure for salaries, rations, stores, fuel, lighting, medicines and instruments, medical comforts, bedding, printing and stationery, incidental expenses, and burials, was £3148 12s 9d; the repayments were £Bl 9s 6d, showing the total cost to be £3067 3s 3d. The total monthly number of out-patients for the six months was as follows :—January, 310 males and 319 females; February, 285 males and 367 females; March, 280 males and 363 females ; April, 370 males and 363 females; May, 308 males and 269 females; June, 363 males and 329 females; total, 1916 males and 2010 females. The average daily number of in-patients was as follows: —January, 105; February, 113; March, 119; April, 118; May, 124 ; June, 133. The average cost of each patient was 2s lOd per day, including medicines, &c., dispensed to out-patients, for the Gaol, Lunatic Asylum, and the Industrial School. It was resolved—“ That the letter be acknowledged with thanks for the valuable information forwarded, and that the officers of the Christchurch Hospital will do their best to forward similar information as soon as it is prepared. The acting house surgeon and steward furnished their reports for the week. The Board considered a number of applications for aid, expenditure in connection with the Orphanage, &c,, which terminated the business. The Board then adjourned.
