Walter German, a trader, has been committed for trial for absconding with £I2OO belonging to his creditors. In the Victorian Legislative Council, Mr Sladen has given notice to move a new clause in the Reform Bil' to reduce the qualification for members to freehold properly, value £125, instead of £250. Air Anderson has given notice that the number of members shall be forty, and the provinces increased to eight. In Adelaide Mr Boucant moves that the land tax be 6i in the £on the value. In Queensland good gold prospects are reported from the Palmer diggings. NEW CALEDONIA. The own correspondent to the Sydney “ Herald” says the total number of victims known to have been massacred is close upon 150. Thirty-two dead bodies of Kanakas were found. Everyone died of gun shot wounds. The latest news is that a detachment of infantry surprised the rebels at a village named Arnbo and killed twenty ; then burnt the village and a considerable quantity of provisions, etc. In this encounter the second column.of soldiers who approached on the other side by night were by mistake fired upon by their comrades, fortunately without any injurious result ere the error was discovered. It is reported that the insurgents are becoming hard up for provisions, as must, of course, be the case, they having no moans of stowing away any quantity of food, even if possessed of anv-
Nothing is heard from the revolted districts. Parts of the island are perfectly quiet except the native land at Poifa, north of Bourail.
The weather continues very hot. Settlers look forward to another hai’d summer if plentiful rains do not soon come. Official information has been received that troops will arrive from Franco and Cochin Obin^

[PER PRESS AGENCY.J A Clergyman Missing. Featheestonk, August 20. A sad accident took place at Rimutaka last night. A waggon and five horses, driven by William Stephen, went over a bad corner known as Drake’s Elbow. The driver and two horses were killed. It was dark at the time of the accident. The deceased was quite a young man. Timahu, August 20. A report is current in town to the effect that the Rev. James Preston, the curate of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Geraldine, is missing. He left, Geraldine to go to Burke’s Pass a few days ago, and has not been heard of since.
