CABLE_NEWS. [special to the press agency.] London, August 15 Correction in cablegram, “ Special, London, 14th.” For “Catholics headed by priests,” read “ priest’s house attacked” and demolished. There have been several arrests. The injuries are serious. NEW ZEALAND TELEGRAMS. [PBB PRESS AGENCY.] Wellington, August 16. Mr D. M. Luckie will shortly assume the editorship of the “ Evening Post,” and Henry Anderson, who has resigned the position as editor of the “Post,” takes charges of the “Evening Chronicle.” The Working Men’s Club celebrated the opening of the new premises last night by a dinner. The club started a short time ago with twenty members only, it has now three hundred members, and the financial affairs of the is in a satisfactory position. A new bi-weekly paper, called the “ Waipawa Mail,” will be started at Waipawa, Hawkes Bay, in about a fortnight by Mr Hugh Thompson, the present editor of the Wellington “Evening Chronicle,” A petition, praying for further inquiry into the case of O’Conner, recently convicted of an attempt to poison William Light, was presented this morning, and it was signed by over eleven hundred persons.
Ahauea, August 16. The announced removal of Warden Shaw has created considerable dissatisfaction throughout the Grey Valley. A requisition is being got up in his favour, and is numerously signed. The electors are strongly opposed to his removal if insisted upon by Government.
Timaru, August 16. The granting of the petition of the rate payers to Governor that the borough of Timaru be divided into ward», has given great satisfaction here. The chairman of the late Timaru and Gladstone Board of Works received £2500 from the Government as payment for the late officers of the Board. This sum will be divided pro rata amongst the Road Boards of South Canterbury. Dunedin, August 16. The annual meeting of the Jockey Club was held last night.; The report and balance-sheet were adopted, and the office bearers elected for ensuing term. One speaker suggested hat trotting should receive greater encouragement, and it was resolved that the new committee should take the matter into consideration. The Otago Bible, Tract and Book Society yesterday received a telegram from the Hon. Mr Stout, that ho would introduce a Bill for the incorporation of the society. PARLIAMENTARY. Last Night’s Proceedings. Wellington, August 16. The principal business done in the House last night after 10 o’clock was in committee, when the following Bills were read a third time and passed : —The Oamaru Waterworks Bill; Land Claims Partial Settlement Bill; Nelson Harbor Bill; Disqualification Bill; Southland Boys and Girls Bill j Interpretation Bill; High School Act Amendment Bill ; Waitaki High School Bill; and Ellesmere Reclamation Bill. The Gatlin’s River Bill was read a second time. The House adjourned at I o’clock.
