[By Telegraph.]
([FROM THE DUNEDIN CORRESPONDENT OF THE PRESS.] Dunedin, August 15, Late Melbourne papers give the following as the latest betting : Melita continues favorite for the Melbourne Cup, for though it was thought she would not advance beyond ten to two for some time, those who entertained the idea had it quickly dispelled by the acceptance of 800 to 100, and 400 to 50 on Thursday night. First King is very firm at 100 to ,5, 4000 to 200 having been booked about him, and Swiveller remains steady at the same figures, while 1000 to 40, and 200 to 10 have been pencilled down in favor of Chester. Emily receives support at 100 to 4 and 5, her most ardent admirer always stepping in when anything beyond 100 to 5 is offered. Another animal that has been made the medium of some speculation during the past few days is the South Australian representative Lockloys, about whom 5000 to 150 has been taken, and so strong is feeling in favor of the St. Alban’s stable that 1000 to 40 against Bosworth for the Y.C.R.
