[PKE PEEBS AGENCY'.] Patea, August 14. Up to yesterdiy the Wuimate Plains survey was proceeding satisfactorily. There was not the slightest apprehension of interference by the Na'ives, though a few of the Europeans were riled at their prognostications of evil not having proved true. They are said to have given false report s as to the intentions of the Government by asserting that fighting was intended. These reports were spread upon the Plains by a few dissatisfied Natives, but with no avail, and the work is proceeding.
Wanganui, August 14. A young man named Frank Martin was killed at the railway station at noon to-day while shunting a goods carriage. Deceased was a porter, and ran in between two timber f rucks with the intention to couple them. The timber protruding over the trucks caught him in the chest and back, and crushed him to death directly, Wellington, August 14. The County Conference to-day concluded its business, and it was resolved that the Counties Act should be amended so as to give the light to counties to levy a county rate over the outlying districts. That a written acceptance of nomination by a candidate for election, if properly attested, shall be sufficient. That the present system of the survey of roads through Crown lands is unsatisfactory, and the Conference suggests that before the survey is undertaken an engineer be appointed to lay off and grade the road lines; that thanks be tendered to Government for the use of the room and for free printing ; also, thanks to the chairman, especially for his casting vote re the maintenance of hospitals, A report of the proceedings will be printed. The total cost of the Conference is only £1 per county. Dunedin, August 14.
The receipts of the Dunedin Jockey Club for the season 1877-78 amounted to £5291 9s 4d, and the expenditure was £6577 8s 2d. The balance of assets over liabilities is £2033 10s 2d, Further additions to the grand stand have been made, including eight loose boxes and a cottage for the park keeper at a coat; of about. £720.
The Secretary for Crown Lands, Wellington, has written to the Chief Commissioner of the Oiago Waste Lands Board, stating that it will meet with the approval of the Government if the Board would, wherever it is deemed necessary, consider two or more contiguous sections as one allotment; so long as the aggregate does not exceed 320 acres in rural lands, and 20 acres of suburban land. Mr A. H. Jack, manager of the National Insurance Company, was entertained at a luncheon by the directors. He proceeds to 3 m Francisco with a view of opening a branch there should sufficient inducement offer.
A series of six entertainments will be given in the Queen’s theatre next week in aid of the Benevolent Institution.
