PRISON LABOUR.
To the Editor of the Ulohe. Sib, —Please allow one of your subscribers space for a few remarks. In a late issue of the Globe it was stated that the superintendent of Addington gaol had made an offer to the Mayor of Sydenham for stone-breaking. Now, sir, it is just as well to try and make gaols self-supporting ; but why not copy the example of our cousins the Americans, and make articles within the gaol itself, and export the same elsewhere for sale ? A number of ns, chiefly elderly men unfit to pioneer the country, now get our living at stone-breaking, and we therefore hope that if the Mayor of Sydenham has decided upon employing prison labour, that he will reconsider the matter and revoke his decision. By so doing he will receive our thanks—and he will also keep open an avenue whereby the veteran sons of toil may continue to gain a living. Yours, &c., A STONEBREAKER.
