Socotra will be garrisoned by Sepoy troops. Gladstone, for two hours and a half, fiercely attacked the Anglo'Turkish Conven
tion, and stigmatised the occupation of Cyprus as unconstitutional. Ho considered that the Russians hud achieved (?) a diplomatic success. Sydney, August 3. The Caledonian insurrection has been repressed. Many villages aro destroyed, and the natives pursued unrelentingly. Many are killed on both sides. An appeal for aid has been made to the French Government. NEW ZEALAND TELEGRAMS. [PEE PRESS AGENCY.] Dunedin, August 3. Mr A. C. Smith, the employer of the girl Caroline Young, who is being prosecuted for concealment of birth, will to-day commence a criminal prosecution for libel agairst the proprietors of the " Saturday Advertiser " for comments published by it concerning this case. At the Dunedin School Committee meeting last gnight the question as to whether the Government should allow the chairmen of school committees, when forwarding lists of candidates for Civil Service to Wellington, to include the names of youths attending Roman Catholic schools, was discussed. The Government had intimated that they would be glad to receive the names of youths attending any schools. Professor Macgrcgor and Mr Fish condemned their action, while Mr Robin said he thought it was but an act of simple justice. At a meeting of the University Debating Society, held last night, Professor Hutton delivered a lecture proving that it w»s impossible that life could have originated on the earth by physical causes.
