Fbiday, August 2. The Legislative Council's address in reply was presented to h's Excellency. The Brands Registration Bill passed with a few amendments. The Government agreed to furnish a report showing the amount, paid as compensation for sheep and cattle destroyed on railways since 1870. Several returns were asked for and promised, and the Council adjourned till Tuesday. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Fbiday, August 2. miscellaneous. The House met at 2 30, when Mr Eeldwick took the oaths and his seat. Dr. Wallis gave notice to ask on "Wednesday next whether the law in the colony, as in England, permitted a man to sell his wife or to maltreat her, and to what extent. In reply to a question, Sir G. Gbey said that the Government had no word yet of the Hawea, though the Pretty Jane had turned up. They had applied for the Nymphe to go out. on search. Ten days' leave of absence was granted to Mr Pyke. MINISTEBIAL SALABIEB AND ALLOWANCES. Mr Ballanck, replying to Mr Johnston, laid on the table a return showing the amount of salary drawn by each Minister since taking office, and the amount beyond actual salary, by way of house allowance or travelling and other expenses; also, amount paid by each Minister in occupation of ministerial residence for rent. consolidation of stock. Mr Stevens asked to what extent the holders of consolidated stock have availed themselves of the provisions of the Consolidated Stock Act, 1877 ; also to what extent the last loan issued had been brought under the operation of tho Act. The information was promised in a printed form in a few days. PUBLIC DOMAINS. In reply to Mr Waken Id, Mr Stout said the Government did not intend to introduce this session any measure to deal witli public domains and gardens throughout the colony. BAJLWAY BESEBTEB. Replying to Mr Wakefield, Mr Macandeew said the Government had been considering the question of subdividing and throwing open for settlement the reserves adjacent to railways, and a Bill dealing with the question was in preparation. telegbaph extension. Replying to Mr Gibbs, Mr Fisheb said the Government would have no objection to extend the telegraph from Motueka to Collingwood, provided those who required it would give a guarantee. nelson waste lands boabd. Replying to Mr Reeves, Mr Stout said the Government would consider the question of appointing a local assistant commissioner of waste lands for Nelson South-west Goldfields. NEW bills. Several Bills were introduced and read a firat time. SUPPLY. *yL resolution that a supply be granted to TOP Majesty was brought on, and the second reading of the Bill fixed for Tuesday.. CIVIL SEKVICE BILL. Mr STOUT moved the second reading of the Civil Service Acts Amendment Bill, which was agreed to, and ordered to be committed next Friday. toe mail. Mr Fisheb announced that tho Taranaki, with the San Francisco mails, had not crossed the Manukau bar at 1.10 p.m. to-day. SELECT COMMITTEE ON PETITIONS. A Select Committee, to whom all petitions are to be first referred before going before the Public Petitions Committee, was agreed to. THE S.S. JIAWEA. Sir G-. Grey announced that the Government had received a note from Captain Townsend, stating that 11.M.5. Nymphe would go out in search of the Hawea. THE HINEMOA. Mr Fiizboy moved iqv a return showing
the cost of working and maintenance of "'' Hinemoa from Ist December, 1877, to 30th June, 1878; also for a return giving the the names of those persons, other than Hi* Excellency and staff and Ministers, who during the aforesaid period travelled in the Hinemoa at the expense of the colony. The PfiEMIEB said the Government would have pleasure in laying before the House the return asked for, but it would be made to include all Government steamers since 1870 to the present dato. The motion wag agreed to. The House then adjourned till Tueadsy at 2.30.
