The “New Zealander” this morning announces that the survey of the Waimate Plains will bo commenced to-day under the direction of Major Brown. It is, ths “ New Zealander” says, expected that the Natives will send out a number of women to enter a kind of formal protest against the survey being proceeded with, but nothing like strong opposition is anticipated. Poet Chalmees, July 30. A serious accident happened at Port Chalmers last night to Harry Maitland, eldest son of Mr J. P. Maitland, the Chief Commissioner of the Waste Lands Board. The young gentleman had visited the Port on horseback. While engaged in remounting, his horse became restless, which caused Mr Maitland to fall on his head heavily. He was at once put to bed in Dodson’s Hotel, and visited by Dr. Drysdale, who found him to be suffering from concussion of the brain.
