PARLIAMENTARY ITEMS.
[Bx Telegraph,] [from orb own correspondent.] THE FINANCIAL STATEMENT. Wellington, July 29. Matters political are to-day comparatively quiet. The rumor that Mr Ballance will make the financial statement to-morrow is nowhere believed. IMMIGRATION RETURNS. Amongst papers to day returned from the Government printers are the immigration returns from the Ist July, 1877, to 30th June, 1878. The number of ordinary immigrants for the whole year was 4599, and of nominated 1029, making a total of 5628, of which as large a number as 5024 were statute adults. The total passage money amounted to £68,651, of which £1729 only has been received in cash, or is recoverable on notes, bills, &c. Of this number of immigrants the province of Canterbury has received by far the largest proportion, totalling 2034 souls. Otago is the next on the list, having received 1668. Wellington is third with 500 ; Auckland, 498 ; Hawke’s Bay, 405. The whole number were British, with the exception of twelve Germans, eight Danes, five Norwegians, ten Italians, and eight of other nationalities. Accompanying these returns are papers of regulations for conveyance of immigrants and cargo to New Zealand, appended to which are detailed schedules of requisite rations and medicines to be provided. MISCELLANEOUS PAPERS. There are also papers relative to special settlement, the Mountain road in Taranaki; and respecting the application of Mr A. C. Fookes for a block of 5000 acres abutting on the Mountain road, in accordance with the Taranaki Waste Lands Act, 1874. THE FIRST CAUCUS. A meeting of the members of Parliament was convened to-day to consider the proposed trunk railway from Auckland to Wanganui, via Taranaki. Many members were absent, and accordingly the meeting was adjourned.
