* The Customs duties collected here on Friday, July 26th, amounted to £674 9s Bd. The items were: —Wines, £3B 4s; spirits, £368 17s 2d; ale (in bulk), £5; tobacco, £26 10s; tea, £44; sugar, £ll3 6s 7d; goods by weight, £llss 7d; ad valorem, £66 13s 4d; other duties, 13s. LAND SALE. Messrs E. Walton and Co. held a sale of landed properties on Saturday. There was a large attendance. The bidding generally was slow, and there was an indisposition shown to anything like specnlative purchases. The following prices were realised:—92 acres of land, with four-roomed house, in Wesley Church road, St. Albans, which brought £217. The next lots offered were the Sonthbridge Junction sections; of these section 1 brought £32; 13, £34 ; 33, £2B; 28 and 29, £25 each ; and 62, £25. These purchases were made for actual settlement, as no speculation whatever was observable in the bidding. Of the Papanui road sections, two only were sold, fronting the Papanui road; section No. 4 realised £IBO, and section 3 £151; the bidding for the other sections not reaching the owner’s reserves. The great attraction appeared to be the sections in the Birmingham township, at the Addington railway station, for which many previous enquiries had been made. The following were disposed of; —Sections 89, 90 and 91 realised £l5O each ; No. 78, £135 ; Nos. 80 and 81, £l4O each; No. 82, £110; Nos. 83, 84 and 85, £135 each. 86 and 87, £l3O each ; 88, £135 ; No. 79, £6O ; 61, £io2; 34, £BS; Nos. 12, 13 and 14 realised £95 each. The house of 10 rooms and 1 rood 7 perches of land were withdrawn at £SOO. The Gloucester street property, comprising house and quarteracre of land, was withdrawn at £619. Three acres and a half of land, with cottage, at Addington was bought in at £330 per acre. ASHBUETON LAND SALE. A sale of valuable properties was held by Messrs Bullock and Co. in their rooms, East street, on Friday, 26th inst. A large number of buyers were present, and the bidding was spirited. The first property put up was that of Dr Trevor, situated on the Alford Forest road. This was sold in sections of one-quarter and one-half acre, and realised the

14 27 The next offered was Mrs Maclean’s property, to the northward of the town, and adjoining the Town Belt. This was in quarter-acre sections, of which there were thirty-three sold, as follows :
