MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, July 27. [Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M.] Drunkenness. —One first offender was fined sb. Destruction of Property.— Annie Barry was charged with the wilful destruction of property valued at 255. The evidence showed that prisoner had this morning thrown a stone through a window of the Rotherfield Hotel. Sergeant Morrice informed tho Bench that the woman was the wife of a man living at Kirwee, and that she had been drinking and knocking about in town. She was fined 60s, and ordered to pay the amount of damage done. Larceny. —Helen Anderson and Margaret Ellison were charged with stealing a stool valued at 7s 6d, tho property of Thomas Gee. They were remanded till Monday, as one had not quite recovered from tho effects of drink. _ LYTTELTON. Saturday, July 27. [Before W. Donald, Esq., R.M., and T. H. Potts, and J. T. Rouse, Esqs., J.P’s.] Larceny.— John Davis, mate of the brigantine Nightingale, was charged by Captain Price, master of that vessel, with this offence. Mr H. N. Nalder |appearcdj for the prosecutor, Detective Smith proved arrest of prisoner. On searching accused’s chest he found some clothes, which were identified as belonging to Wm. McLeod, who was formerly steward on board and had left the vessel. Accused was also wearing a pair of braces and other things, also the property of McLeod. Accused applied for a remand in order to get a lawyer, to defend him, from Christchurch. The Bench granted the remand till Wednesday, fixing bail at £IOO for prisoner and two £SO sureties. Transfer of License.— The license of the British Hotel was transferred from Joseph Baldwin to Susan DaCosta.
