[6PECIAL TO THE PEES 3 AGENCY.] London, July 22. Mr Gladstone, speaking to the Liberals of Southwell, and Mr Forster, at the Cobden Club, denounced tbe convention with Turkey. An enthusiastic meeting has been held in Italy against Austria, and in favour of Greece.

Melbourne, July 22. Young Benzique won the Waterloo Cup, Pry being the runner-up. Electric won the Plate, Bowena being the runner-up. Dr. Bradford still remains in gaol. The Court has given a stringent judgment to prevent Dr. Bradford touching the property. INTERPROVINCIAL [pee peess agency.] Feath hhston, July 23. It is expected that the rails will be laid into Feathorston in a fortnight. About a quarter of a mile of Dixon’s contract between Feathorston and Greytown is now made. Wellington, July 23.
A deputation consisting of Messrs Gisborne, Wooloock, and George, M.II.R’b., waited on Mr Macandrew re connecting East and West Coasts by rui' way. Mr Macandrew said the Government were so impressed with the importance of the scheme that they would not hesitate a moment in undertaking the work at once, but that other works of mure immediate necessity required their attention. In the meantime provision had been made for extending the line from Amberley. In reply to a suggestion by the deputation that the Government should subsidise a. steam tug for Hokitika, Mr Macandrew said this was a matter the Government could not undertake. Such questions were left to Harbor Boards. A large fire occurred at Masterton early this morning, destroying tbe following places —William’s, Wyllie,s, Girdleston’s, Sellar’s, and Halo’s stores, and Wairarapa “Register” office. The fire began in the latter, but the origin is unknown. It is suspected to be the work of an incendiary. Previous to the fire being discovered, an explosion was heard in the “ Register ” office, and then the llamea spread rapidly. It is estimated that the loss is between £20,000 and £3O 000. Some of the goods from Sellar’s and Haye’s stores were saved, but much damaged by rain. The rest was a total loss. Dunedin, July 23. At a meeting yesterday it was decided to form a company with a capital of £IO,OOO to provide steam communication with Portobello. Messrs Ross and Driver, candidates for Rosiyn, addressed meetings last night. Both announced themselves supporters of the present Government.
