[Per Arawata, via Bluff.] London, Juno 7. The German Emperor consents to the wedding between the Duke of Connaught and Princess Louise being celebrated in England. Ministers will shortly ask Parliament for a marriage portion of £IO,OOO a year, in addition to the £ISOO which the Duke already draws from tho State, The Duchess of Edinburgh will spend some months at Coburg, and will not visit St. Petersburg}! at present. The University College, London, and tho University College Hospital, gain between them £500,000 by the bequest of Sir Francis Goldsmid, who was treasurer to this institution. Cleopatra’s needle has been moved from Westminster to Adelphi Pier, and preparations have been made for landing and erecting it on the embankment. Doctor Hooker retires from the presidency of the Royal Society, and will probably be succeeded by Mr W. Spottiswoode. Sir C. Reed has accepted the invitation of the Prince of Wales to act as juror for Groat Britain on tho education section of the Paris Exhibition. An influential deputation has had an interview with the Home Secretary to present a petition, signed by many thousands of persons, praying that all public houses may, by legislation, be closed on Sunday. In proposing the toast of “The Colonies” the chairman referred to the completion of the arrangement for duplicating the cable and eulogised colonial enterprise. Sir A. Michie and Mr Foreler responded. The British Consul, while journeying in Crete, was shot at by the Turks, but escaped unhurt.
