The Suez Mail. —The Arawata, with the Suez mail, arrived at the Bluff to-day. The news is unimportant. Appointment. -Mr H. M. Lee has been gazetted clerk to the Leeston Magistrates’ Court, and also to the Ellesmere Licensing Court. Constabulary.—Many residents in Lyttelton will be sorry to hear that Constable Bullen has been removed to Christchurch. During his stay in port he has gained general goodwill, particularly by his kindly exertions in the cause of the helpless or distressed. Political. —Mr W. S. Moorhouse addressed the electors of Christchurch on Saturday evening at the Oddfellows’ Hall. There was a good attendance. The address itself was not lengthy, but almost innumerable questions on every conceivable subject were put to the candidate, which had the effect of prolonging the meeting until after ton o’clock. A vote of thanks to Mr Moorhouse for his address was carried. A report of the proceedings appears elsewhere. Tempeeancb Hall poe Lyttelton.— A meeting was held at the Borough Council Chambers, Lyttelton, on Friday evening last, to take into consideration the advisableness of forming a company for the purpose of erecting temperance coffee and dining rooms, hall, &c. There was a good attendance, His Worship the Mayor occupying the chair. It was resolved —“ That, in the opinion of this meeting, the time has arrived when a place of entertainment, founded on temperance principles, should be established in Lyttelton.” After long discussion, His Worship the Mayor, Messrs Phillips, Nalder, Macpherson, Early, Reed, S. R. Webb, Brown, R. Wood, and W. Graham were appointed a committee to ascertain the probable cost of establishing and maintaining a place of entertainment, on temperance principles, either in the form of a sailors’ home, working men’s club, or tea, coffee, and dining rooms, with hall attached, as may seem most suitable to them. The meeting then adjourned. Railway Tariff. —The following alterations and additions to the rates for the conveyance, delivery, and storage of goods, parcels, &c., on all the New Zealand Railways are to take effect from the Ist day of July, 1878 :—Fractional parts of a mile—distances of five (5) chains and over are to be counted and charged as a full mile. Odd chains under five (5) are to be foregone. Conveyance native coals —conveyance of native coals from collerics, in Government trucks, one shilling and sixpence (Is Gd) per ton for distance of three miles (3) miles and under; two shillings and sixpence (2s Gd) per ton for distances over three (3) miles and not exceeding fifteen (15) miles ; twopence (2d) per ton per mile for each additional mile up to twenty-five (25) miles ; three half-pence (IJd) per ton per mile for each additional mile up to fifty (50) miles ; one penny (Id) per ton per mile for each additional mile. Full truck charged for. Trucks will be allowed to remain at coal pits eight (8) working hours for the purpose of loading, after which demurrage will be charged at the rate of one pound (fll) per day or fraction thereof. Any time from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. counted as working hours. Entertainment. —A popular entertainment will ho given in the St. Andrew’s Schoolroom on Thursday evening. P.A.li’.S.O. A. —A special meeting of the above Lodge will bo hold in the Orange Hall this evening, at half-past 7 o’clock. Charitable Aid Board.—A meeting of this Board will take place to-morrow evening, at 7 p.m., when, amongst other business to bo transacted, the question of the removal of the inmates of the Selwyn Home to more suitable quarter u will be considered, Aealandia Minstrels. —Tiiis clever company will give a concert at the Oddfellows’ Hall on Thursday next, in aid of the funds of the High School Cadets. A capital programme has been prepared for the occasion, and no doubt the Minstrels will receive that amount of public support to which they are so fully entitled.i
