The Marquis of Hartington has given notice of motion in the House of Commons complimenting Congress on having succeeded in securing an European peace, but regretting the incomplete settlement of the Greek claims and the undefined responsibility incurred by Ministers without the consent of Parliament. Mr Gladstone, at a Liberal demonstration, denounced the treaty of peace adopted by Congress, especially the Anglo-Turkish convention. INTERPROVINCIAL. [pee press agency.] The Wellington Poisoning Case. Fatal Accident at Nelson. Patea, July 22. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt here at a quarter to 11 o’clock on Saturday night. Nelson, July 22. As the football players were leaving the ground on Saturday afternoon, a carriage containing a number of them knocked down and ran over a little boy, son of Mr E. Levey, a painter, the wheels passing over its stomach. It died at 1 p.m. Wellington, July 22. Last night Father Hennebery addressed a crowded congregation in the Catholic Cathedral, when ho emphatically denied having made the statement that mixed marriages were no marriages at all, and characterised the accusation as “ a base and wicked falsehood.” After the service, he referred to the expenses incurred in renovating the Cathedral, and then told those who were willing to subscribe towards defraying the same to stand up, when the whole congregation stood up cn manse. Father Hennebery and three pries's then went amongst the people, and shortly announced that £llOO had been subscribed. The pockets of a waistcoat belonging to O’Connor, lately convicted of attempting to poison Light, the publican, have been analysed by Dr. Hector, and found to contain poison. A meeting has been called by the Mayor for this evening, with the object of petitioning the Government to mitigate O’Connor’s sentence, hut it will probably now collapse. A sharp shock of earthquake was felt here at 11.40 on Saturday night. Dunedin, July 22. A conference between the Harbor Board and City Council upon the question of a site for a railway goods station will be held on Wednesday next. This is intended to bo preliminary to appealing to the public should such be necessary.
