RIFLE ASSOCIATION.
The first meeting of the Council elected for the season 1878-9 took place at Radcliffe’s hotel, on Thursday evening. Present—All members, viz., Messrs Abel, Appleby, Bell, Buckley, Mills, Souter, and Warner, Captain Warner was unanimously elected chairman of the Council for the present season. The hon, treasurer (Mr Appleby) stated that lie had discharged all liabilities of the association, and there remained a credit balance of £6 4s Id, paid into the Colonial Bank. He also had sent, on behalf of the association, a challenge to the Otago Association to fire an annual interprovincial match, to be fired in Dunedin and Christchurch in alternate years. To this he had not yet received any reply, but did not doubt but that the challenge would be readily accepted. On the motion of Mr Mills, seconded by Mr Abel, it was decided that a circular letter be drawn up and distributed, soliciting the support of the public to the association. It was also decided to employ the services of a collector, the appointment to bo left with the treasurer. Mr G. S. Bell was elected secretary for the year. After consideration of other matters, the Council adjourned until Thursday next, when a new code of regulations for match firing will be drawn up.
