FORTY YEARS’ WAR.
The following short lists of wars in which Great Britain has been engaged since the passing of the Reform Bill (says an English contemporary) will not be uninteresting at the present time. Wo omit various engagements in which wo took part in connection witli the revolutions in Spain and Portugal. It is very remarkable that with scarce an ex. ception in the “rebellions,” “insurrections,” or “ware,” the commencement of all has been in connection with Liberal Governments. Sir Robert Peel had to complain, when he took office in 1811, of having to provide for the expenses connected with putting down tire rebellion in Canada, hostilities in Syria, and war in China:—Kaffir war (Lord Melbourne), 1834 ; Canadian rebellion (Lord Melbourne), 1837-8; Afghan war (Lord Melbourne), 1839 ; Aden taken (Lord Melbourne), 1839 ; Stdon taken (Lord Melbourne), 1840; Beyrout taken (Lord Melbourne), 1840; Acre stormed (Lord Melbourne), 1840; Chinese war (Lord Melbourne), 1841 ; Cabul insurrection (Lord Melbourne), 1841 ; Scinde war (*Sir R. Peel), 1843 ; Gwalior war (Sir R. Peel), 1845; Sikh war (Sir R, Peel), 1845 ; Kaffir war (Lord John Russell), 1850; Burmese war (Lord John Russell), 1851 ; Cri mean war (*Lord Aberdeen), 1854 ; Persian war (Lord Palmerston), 1857 : Indian Mutiny (Lord Palmerston), 1857; Chinese war (*Lord Palmerston), 1859; Rebellion, New Zealand (*Lord Palmerston), 1860 ; Ashantee war (*Lord Palmerston), 1863 ; Abyssinian war (Lord Derby), 1867; Ashantee war (Mr Gladstone), 1873. Sir Robert Peel’s Government found war raging in India. Mr Gladstone was a member of all the Cabinets marked thus *.
