As the schooner Merlin, from Waitara, was crossing the Kaipara bar, sea being heavy, the captain got into the rigging to point out the channel. The other two men were on deck, ono steering. The captain seeing a terrific sea rushing on the vessel, cried out “ Look out.” The manat the wheel was frightened, and ran forward. The wave completely covered the vessel, broaching her to, and causing the ballast to shift, throwing her almost on her beam ends. When the wave receded the two men on deck were missing. The captain got the schooner near the pilot station, whore it was noticed that something was wrong. A boat was sent oil, and the crew righted her ballast, and anchored the vessel. The same evening she proceeded to the Mills. The Harbor Board have received letters from the Government, asking for permission to reclaim seven acres for railway station at Queen street Wharf. The Board resolved to defer their decision until after the receipt of Messrs Conyers and Lawson’s report. The man Black, the victim of the attempted murder at Arch Hill, is recovering. Napier, July 16, At a meeting of the Harbor Board to-day, a vote of thanks was passed to Mr Carruchers for his services in respect of the Napier harbor, and a, sura of £IOO voted to him. A large meeting of coal miners at Brunnerton,on Saturday, passed the following resolutions :—(1) “That this meeting cordially endorse the action taken by the public meeting at Greymonth, with the view of representing to the Government the necessity of immediately proceeding with the works for the improvement of the Grey harbor ; (2) that the absence of any positive provision for the continuous prosecution of t hese works is not only discouraging to those who have largely invested their money for the purpose of developing the resources of this district, but absolutely prevents them from giving any guarantee of permanent employment to their workmen; (3) that this state of uncertainty Las already been productive of very serious consfquenccs to this district, owing to the want of regular employment of the skilled labour, which under other circumstances would find an ample and profitable field ; (1) that the Government be urged at puce to assist the development of the coal mines by subsidising a steam tug, so that vessels coming here tor coal could be towed in and out free of charge.” A committee was appointed to draw up a memorial embodying ttie foregoing resolutions, which are to be forwarded to the Minister of Public Works and to the members of the district. Subsequently it was resolved that the Government be urged to proceed with the construction of the railway to the East Coast. The state of the coal miners here is very deplorable, and many of the men are leaving the district. Dunedin, July 16, Mr Micandrew t>day received deputations from the Harbor Board, Chamber of Commerce, and other public bodies. Ho stated that the Northern Railway line would be

finished by the middle of August, and the Southern line in September, A meeting was held to-day re construction of railway to Portobello, but there seems to be a diversity of opinion as to the course which the line should take. iho Minister for Lands and Attorn General, accompanied by Messrs Blair, Conyers, Hume, and other gentlemen, proceeded to Blueskin by special train, to fix a site for the new Lunatic Asylum and Industrial School.

The Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association to-day approved of the proposal to form a National Association. They also resolved to buy twenty acres of land on Wai Hi road, about a mile from town, on which to hold shows in future.

The following amounts were paid over tonight on account of the steeplechases : Powell, £SO; Barton, £75 ss; Fraser, £B2 10s ; Hawdon, £4O ; Ravenhill, £3B ; Cornelius, £35. The racehorses Lonehand, Brunette, Jack, and Baron were offered for sale to-day, but were all withdrawn.
