ARRIVAL OF THE BARQUE COLUMBUS FROM LONDON. The barque Columbus, under charter to the Now Zealand Shipping Company, arrived yesterday morning, anchoring off the Heads at 5 a.m. At 11 a.m. she got under weigh and beat up to a berth off Rhodes’ Bay. Owing to the Titan’s being on the slip, and it being the day for the Akaroa’s trip to Pigeon Bay, there was no steamer available to tow the barque in, and it was two in the afternoon before the Health Officer cleared her and your reporter proceeded on board. The Columbns is a composite vessel < f 744 tons, and has been here before (in 1874), when she made tie passage out from London in eighty-six days. She has since visited Ol ago and Auckland, having been at the latter port last year. She is a handsome little vessel, bnt is rather doen this trip. Her passage has occupied 116 days, much time having been lost, principally through light trades, calms about the Equator, and light variables from losing the S.E. fcndes to the meridian of the Cape of Good Hope. Ko special accident occurred on the passage; one heavy sea came aboard, flooding the saloon and doing some slight damage, but this will bo easily ren tired. The l olnmbas brought three saloon and four steerage passengers ; Ihe latter were lodged in the house on deck, and speak well of the kind treatment they received and the quality of the provisions provided. The cargo is a large and valuable one and, ns before stated, the vessel comes consigned to the New Zealand Shipping Company, The following is the captain’s report of the trip: Xoft Gravesend March 21st; passed Deal on -2ml. Mad N.W. winds and thick weather in Channel, and took final departure from land on the 23th. Strong westerly winds prevailed across the Bay with occasional gales.
